Headcorn Aerodrome hosts ‘It’s not the Olympics’ Event

Headcorn Aerodrome in Kent is hosting an event on Saturday 28 July (the day after the Official Olympic opening ceremony) to encourage GA visitors to the Kent-based airfield during the Olympic period for ‘flight plan-free’ flying.

Headcorn Aerodrome is located on the edge of the Olympic Zone and has permission for GA pilots to fly ‘flight-plan-free’ leaving the ATZ to the South East (subject to certain procedures) during the Olympic period. For more details visit www.headcornaerodrome.co.uk

Themed ‘It’s not the Olympics: it’s the Bavarian Beer Fest’ the event will encourage GA pilots to fly-in and ‘camp under the wing’ or stay in one of the friendly local B&Bs in nearby villages.

The Beer Fest will be hosted in the newly-built 23,400 sq. ft dual-purpose solar-powered hangar, which features 16,200 sq. feet specifically for aircraft storage.  The evening event will include Bavarian and Kent local beers, Bratwurst sausages and entertainment from a German Um Pah Band providing a vast repertoire of German music and English sing-along tunes.  Fly-ins are encouraged all day and the evening event takes place from 1930 – 2330 priced at just £10 a ticket the event with Bavarian fancy dress goers get a free bratwurst!

The theme for the event was inspired by the two privately-owned Bucker Jungmann aircraft, based at Headcorn Aerodrome, that have Olympic rings on their nose cowlings.

Jamie Freeman, owner, Headcorn Aerodrome commented: “It is a little known fact that in 1936 Aerobatics was an Olympic sport in the Berlin Olympics.  This inspired us to create a German beer fest hangar party to celebrate Olympic Zone-free flying over the beautiful Kent countryside from Headcorn Aerodrome this summer.

“We have a number of fly-ins and events at Headcorn Aerodrome this summer and we would like to encourage more visiting pilots to come and join in. Upcoming events include a Douglas Barder Charity day on Sunday 5 August, Combined Ops Airshow 11-12 August, British Women Pilots’ Association activities including fly-outs to Goodwood Aerodrome from Headcorn and the Tiger Club’s Dick Bentley Aerobatic Competition days.”

The British Women Pilots’ Association (BWPA) South East group, recently formed at Headcorn Aerodrome would also like to encourage women pilots from across the South East to attend.

BWPA South East Group Co-ordinator Samantha Williams commented: “The BWPA South East group was founded in May and we already have an active group planning fly-outs and events.  We would like to invite women pilots from around the South East to join our event on 28 July and find out more about the various events we have planned this year.”

Tickets to the ‘It’s not the Olympics: it’s a Bavarian Beer Fest’ event are available from Weald Air Services on Tel: 01622 891539 or via the website www.headcornaerodrome.co.uk
