Headcorn
Aerodrome in Kent is hosting an event on Saturday 28 July (the day after the
Official Olympic opening ceremony) to encourage GA visitors to the Kent-based
airfield during the Olympic period for ‘flight plan-free’ flying.
The theme for the event was inspired by the two privately-owned Bucker Jungmann aircraft, based at Headcorn Aerodrome, that have Olympic rings on their nose cowlings.
Headcorn
Aerodrome is located on the edge of the Olympic Zone and has permission for GA
pilots to fly ‘flight-plan-free’ leaving the ATZ to the South East (subject to
certain procedures) during the Olympic period. For more details visit

Jamie
Freeman, owner, Headcorn Aerodrome commented: “It is a little known fact that
in 1936 Aerobatics was an Olympic sport in the Berlin Olympics. This
inspired us to create a German beer fest hangar party to celebrate Olympic
Zone-free flying over the beautiful Kent countryside from Headcorn Aerodrome
this summer.
“We
have a number of fly-ins and events at Headcorn Aerodrome this summer and we
would like to encourage more visiting pilots to come and join in. Upcoming
events include a Douglas Barder Charity day on Sunday 5 August, Combined Ops
Airshow 11-12 August, British Women Pilots’ Association activities including
fly-outs to Goodwood Aerodrome from Headcorn and the Tiger Club’s Dick Bentley
Aerobatic Competition days.”
The
British Women Pilots’ Association (BWPA) South East group, recently formed at
Headcorn Aerodrome would also like to encourage women pilots from across the
South East to attend.
BWPA
South East Group Co-ordinator Samantha Williams commented: “The BWPA South East
group was founded in May and we already have an active group planning fly-outs
and events. We would like to invite women pilots from around the South
East to join our event on 28 July and find out more about the various events we
have planned this year.”
